Oct.21 - Oct. 25

Here is our learning for the week of Oct.21.

On Tuesday, we had our field trip to Ralph Klein Park and the Shepard Landfill. When we first arrived, we got a tour of the building there. The building walls were made out of rocks and wire cages. It seemed like we were on a floating structure over the water. We did some learning in one of the classrooms where we learned about animals and how sometimes they eat plastic. We investigated more about plastic and how it impacts the environment. Next, we got back on the bus and toured around the landfill and composting facility. We learned about the different layers in the ground and how garbage is packed with dirt to make a garbage hill that is eventually covered in grass. It takes 5 years to fill one cell of the landfill! After that, we went back to the classroom and created our own action plan for how we could each take care of the environment.

We had our last day of swimming on Wednesday! Some of us got to swim with our clothes on so we could experience what it is like when you have to save someone in the water or if you fall in accidentally. Some of us got to go on the slide and diving board!

On Thursday, Jarvis (Kalia's dad) taught us about how to use pressure to make water flow. We can use some of these ideas when designing our irrigation system for the school garden.

Today, we will be learning about how to deal with problems at school or home and how to react to different problems of different sizes. We can tell you more about this next week!

We have been researching water by reading nonfiction books from the library. After reading chapter 3 in A Long Walk to Water, we decided we wanted to know more about water in our world.

In science, we learned how to upload documents or images on Iris. You can see our work by logging in here.

Kohana's dad let us look at a design plan for a building in the city from his architecture company. We got to flip through the giant book and try to figure out what each page was about. We realized how much work goes into the design of a structure before the actual building happens.

In math, we started reading a math story called, "365 Penguins". In the story, a family is delivered one penguin a day and has to figure out how to take care of all the penguins. It includes calendar math. We watched a video that explained why February only has 28 days and sometimes 29.
